How we found the place

The only instructions that we had was to get to Marla (the last place where you could buy petrol and supplies), travel for 50 km north turn left at the white mail box. Drive for 11/2 hours and we will come to a small township called Mimilli, go between the house and the big shed, turn left and left again at the Y intersections, drive for another hour and you will come to Fregon.

We followed the instructions but had no idea of whether we were doing the right thing. We saw not one car in the 2.5 hours it took to drive the sandy corrugated road. It was with much relief when we saw the disused petrol pump, where we had to turn right.

Our house was to be the 3rd on the left, there we only 5 houses all together of this side of the dry creek so it wasn't hard to find but how do we get in? An Aboriginal family wandered over and it was difficult to understand their English, they were know as the Treacle's named after the Aboriginal elder. A white woman came over who introduced herself a Bronwyn Frank (she would later become a close friend). Bronwyn radioed (each house has a CD radio as there were no telephones in the houses) the school to say that we had arrived and Anne walked over to open up the house.

David had already began playing with the children from the Treakles but James didn't like the fact that all of the children were very dark skinned and didn't speak any words that he understood. In fact once we were inside he climbed inside the cupboard in his room and didn't come out for 2 weeks.
