Going home for Xmas

Soon the term past by and I was rang up by the Education Department to be asked if I wanted to become a permanent teacher with the South Australian Education Department - after a millisecond I agreed. This is what I had come to Fregon to achieve. As life would have it we also found out that Bruce would no longer be able to have his plumbing job as the company was going bankrupt due to the government not paying their bills.

We had a young puppy wander into our house to play with the boys -she was the ugliest puppy I had ever seen. A mixture of dingo and staffordshire terrier but she had the most tolerant nature that I had ever seen in a puppy. She was so gently with the boys and she followed David around like a hero. Of course I had to feed her scraps and things. Bruce had left me with strict instructions not to feed any animals or encourage them to hang around the house. (He knows what I am like to strays). I thought that if she survived without us over the Christmas holidays I would see if Bruce would let us keep her.

So again I packed up the house and threw all boys and Puddles the poodle into the car and off we headed for Adelaide. It wasn't as eventful as the first trip down on my own however I made very good time and only took 13 hours of driving.

Bruce had organised with some friends (Erica and Don Cuningham) to move into our house while we were in Fregon. No-one else could have put up with Bruce's collections of dead cars. So we spent the holidays packing up the house and making a more permanent move to the bush.

After saying good-bye to all of our friends we drove back to Fregon in very hot weather. I had got used to the weather while I was up there before Xmas, in fact the thermometer under the porch got to 50 degrees Celsius for 2 weeks. It could have been hotter except that is all the thermometer went too. Of course my air conditioner broke down for that time. It certainly gave you a sense of what it would have been like back in the 1940's when there were no modern conveniences and when they were truly isolated.
