A new rifle

David loved to follow Kuli around, especially when they were living across the road.

Bronwyn and Kuli Frank with David

One day when Bronwyn, James and I were walking home from the store there was Kuli riding very slowly on his motorbike with David madly peddling as fast as his little legs would go. David wanted to go mustering with Kuli although he thought that it was too far for David (the cattle were 28km's out of town) so they were both riding around town together.

We thougth that David had forgotten all about mustering however once when he was riding the motorbike and sidecar around the front of the house (the sidcare had 20 litres of water in a big bottle strapped to it). Kuli started his bike to go mustering. David asked if he could go too - Kuli just smilled because he couldn't hear- David thought that this meant yes! Kuli roared off down the main road to Ernabella, Bronwyn and I looked up to see David to see little David madly following Kuli down the road. We thought that he would turn around and come back but no up the hill he went and turned left onto the main road and out of site. There was Bronwyn and I yelling and running down the road (not a pretty sight). I turned around to go and get Bruce to follow his tracks on his motorbike when a double semi-trailer truck came roaring over the hill. I could imagine David in the middle of the road flat as a pancake. Then we heard the tiny sound of a 50cc Honda, phew! He was coming back home. David had managed to stop beside the road while the semi went passed, when we asked him what was he doing? He said that he was followiing Kuli but lost his trail just after the sandhill so he thought he had better come home. Amazing!

The family that shoots together stays together. We took this photo to send as Xmas cards.

Bruce got sick of trying to kill rabbits with the 22 so he bought a 8mm Mauzer from Spare Parts - yes they sell riffles but not globes. These type of riffles were used by the Germans in the Second World War and Bruce assures me it was quite the bargin. We we all set off to the Old Farm which was about 3kms out of town and there were some old concrete walls which we often set-up for target shooting. We filled some coke cans with sand, David, James and I sat ontop of the like an audince waiting for a show. Bruce pulled the trigger, the blast shot him back, bruised his shoulder but the noise was incredible and the audience sat numb, ears ringing, eyes popping wide open and mouths open. Bruce had a grin from ear to ear - did you see that he exclaims. We look up to see the cans disintergrated but nope they were still there unscathed but 2 meters behind thme was a large crater in the ground. Bruce convinced me to have a go - why can he always get me to do

James became an excellent and accurate shot even when he was 6 years old

silly things! We lined up the cans 2 metres back everyone stood back, with their fingers in their ears. Slowly I pull back the trigger, its not till you get to the last millimeter that anything happens. BANG!!!!! The recoil shot me back half a meter, the tracks of my shoes clearly in the sand. When I got my hearing back all I could hear was Bruce and David hysterically laughing. David thought that i looked like something out of a bugs bunny cartoon. Thanks I said would he like to have a go but he quickly shook his head. James was still wide-eyed as a doe - he hated any loud noise - we got him ear-muffs so baffle the sounds and he was very happy.
