Smoking Damper

I decided that in order to be a successful bush person I needed to have open-fire cooking skills. After all how hard could it be? I had seen Ann cook a damper and I had been on community picnics so I wanted to show Bruce what an outdoor type person I had become. One of the most amazing things about the summer is the amount of flies that form. They get everywhere - in your mouth if you open it too wide and in Bruces' case up his nose - yuck.

This particular day we decided that we would go out to Westbore to collect some rocks to construct a barbeque with and this is the only place around that you can find rocks suitable. As the flies had died down slightly we thought that we would risk it and go out there. As we were getting the fire going the kids were running around having a great time meanwhile Bruce was getting more and more agrivated as the flies were having a convention at Westbore so they were all there ready for our arrvial. In the end Bruce decided to lock himself in the car and even then millions were trying to get into the car and lining up on the windscreen. Using the wiperblades did not do much for the glass as the streekes of fly blood was not a good look.

The only releif from them was to stand in the smoke of the fire and then theat became too hot after a while. I was determined to have this wonderful damper that I had made so i stacked up the wood on the fire. In the end we had all ahd enough of flies and smoke so I dug the damper out of the fire. It was a cindering, smoking mess on the outside and dough on the inside. At least I was going to have a peice. It cruched as you chewed and left your teeth black from the charcoal however it was my first and i had to at least make out it was yummy. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't convince the rest of the family to have any. So we kicked out the fire and returned to Fregon.
