Latest SmartCarby Developments

New 4 barrel large CFM carburettors.

The development of the large CFM 4 barrel carburettors is in the testing phase. They are capable of approximately 1500CFM flow if needed.

These carburettors have proven more powerful than either the Holley dominators or the 6 barrel SmartCarby. The extra torque is conservatively estimated at 60ft/lbs increase over the best torque figures of the Holley Dominators. This can only be estimated by the calculated torque increase necessary to achieve the new launch G’s experienced at Willowbank. As the engine is now being reconfigured for higher RPM‘s the next lot of dyno sessions will be done with different cam profiles etc.

These carburettors were run on the Blackjack car at a test and tune, then the Nitro’s at WSID and then at the Winter Nationals at Willowbank Drag Way . The car ran the quickest ET of this engine combination on the first full pass at the test and tune. As the day progressed, further tuning of the engine resulted in increased wheel spin at various positions down the track and as a result the ET’s slowed with the driver having back off the throttle to regain control of the car. A continual problem at WSID is the consistency of the track.

At the Nitro’s meeting the track preparation had been changed and to the track crew’s credit there was a considerable improvement in grip consistency for the ¼ mile. The Blackjack car’s regular Driver Brett Curnow was unable to drive for this meeting so Tim Nielsen doubled up the driving duties with his Modified Dragster to help us out. Unfortunately Tim weighs 66lbs heavier than Brett and the cars times reflected this.

At Willowbank Raceway the Traction was so good and the engine torque so great that the car launched at 2.75g’s (previous best ever on any track any engine/chassis combo 2.4g’s) and lifted too high and went off line, this caused the driver to abort the run at ¼ track for safety reasons.

The new 4 barrels feature experimental designs in some of the fuel circuits and these are proving to be very good. The Holley Dominators could maximum stall the torque converter to 6400 rpm, the 6 barrels could stall up to 6580 rpm, the new experimental 4 barrels stall up to 7000 rpm.

New Fuel Economy 2 barrel Carburettor.

With today’s energy costs people have been inquiring about fuel economy carburettors. We have been developing a low cost SmartCarby version that will provide exceptional fuel economy, emission control and performance. We know that this sounds like all the other magic sales pitches out there so we have displayed a screen shot taken of a 4-gas Andros analyser. This analyser data logs the exhaust emissions over 45 second of time.

The gas readings indicate near maximum possible fuel efficiency at full throttle. Further tests are scheduled for improving the efficiency at the part throttle settings and further improving the efficiency at full throttle.

The AFR was 13.7 to 1 at the part throttles and 15 to 1 at full load.

The full throttle section is the interesting gasses that research is current for.

  • This engine is a standard 302 Ford Windsor in a ski boat. The engine is running at 4100 rpm and produces faster boat speed than the 350 Holley that was replaced by the SmartCarby experimental unit.
  • The fuel is regular unleaded. The engine is not fitted with a cat or mufflers. The installation is typical ski boat.
  • The research on this engine for economy at part throttle has not been started yet so please disregard this data section. The engine is in worn condition typical of a very high mileage engine and the emissions at part throttle reflect some of this problem.
