Number 17

Thunderbird Speedway, Virginia 1970

Supermodified

Bought from Graham McCubbin from Victoria 1962. The car was the second of its type built, up until then all cars were the older style full bodies sedans like 48 Fords etc.

Statistics: Valiant Slant 6; Ford T chassis rails; Austin A90 diff.; 48 Ford Front Axle;. Engine fitted with 3 stromburg 97's carbies; Wade 102 camshaft.

It was raced for 8 seasons with great success including multiple state titles and numerous highest point scorer.

He sold the car at the 1973 and started racing Speedcars.

Currently restored and racing in classic speedway

Dear Sir,

I was amazed to find on entering the pits last Friday that a certain section of one-eyed Wigzell fans had gathered around Phil Hereen's Modified S.A.I, insinuating he should be rubbed out for life, for being the cause of BiJJ Wigzell clipping the fence and rolling. I hare followed with great admiration both the skills and determinations that these two drivers possess. But in my mind and many others, Phil Hereen has now been blamed for something out of his control, being IN FRONT of car 88 at the time. It is unfortunate that there is a small section of the crowd that is allowed to carry on to such a degree, in crucifying any driver who attempts to beat Mr. Wigzell.

I sympathize with the supporter who, a few weeks ago, asked was there a law against barracking for Phil Herreen. I think speedway would be finished without the type of racing these drivers provide.

From an IRATE FAN, JAN ROBERTSON

[Thanks for your letter, and it's indeed unfortunate that a small number of the numerous Wigzell fans can't see anything else but the purple blurr in front of their noses. I noticed the incident along with R.D.A. officials in the pits and I can assure you that it has been noted. As Bill says himself, "that's racing", and he, too, was extremely upset at the way his so-called "fans" were trying to persecute Phil after the races. He also added it doesn't do him any good to have his fans running around trying to cause arguments. So, fellows, you know who you are, take it easy and let's "go racing".-G.H.J
