Andy promptly purchased a 650 CFM carburetor, which was used for the first time at the opening meeting. All the races were handicaps and Andy was given very large handicaps because of his performance. The handicapping was well done because Andy finished second in the races by just a boat length in it so it was quite exciting. The LeMans start race is not a handicap and Andy blew the entire field away. Many competitors have noticed the performance improvement in Andy’s boat, which has demonstrated much more power through the corners and vastly improved acceleration out of the corners. The top speed of the boat has increased approx 3mph depending on weather and water conditions etc. Andy’s comments have been that “whereas with the Holley I was flat through the turns and the engine revs would be pulled down, with the SmartCarby I have to lift to stop the extra power from spinning me out. If I see a hole in the traffic exiting a turn I just have to jump on the throttle and the boat instantly goes into the hole. The acceleration and throttle response is excellent.” David Kemp is the mechanic for the boat and has many years of experience in most forms of motor sport. He is very pleased with the improvements to the power of the motor and the evenness of the sparkplug readings and the ease of achieving this with the SmartCarby. David and Jim Sawtell have modified the water flow system to try to increase the water temperature of the engine because as is always the case the improved combustion efficiency of the SmartCarby system results in less heat loss into the water jacket and more energy into the crankshaft. If you use a thermostat this problem is removed but thermostating boats is not generally done because of blockage problems etc in the open waters |
